Shared hosting is great for non mission critical web sites, but for real reliability, salability and security for e-commerce and other mission critical web sites you need your own dedicated server or VPS. If your web site is your primary source of income or is critical for your business do you really want to risk sharing a server with several hundred other customers, any of whom can affect performance of the server and cause downtime at any time.

Unfortunately not everyone can afford their own dedicated managed server or have the technical skills to manage one, so our semi-dedicated solution is meant to bridge the gap between shared and dedicated hosting. A fully managed server with a maximum of 50 web sites per server, giving you added performance and reliability compared to normal shared hosting. We very rarely have any problems with our semi-dedicated servers, but if performance does begin to slip, we will immediately move any particularly busy sites to a less busy server.

The Problem

The problem with shared hosting is that every customer and their web site on a shared server are essentially at the mercy of all the other customers. A shared server will normally host many hundreds or even thousands of other web sites, any of which could be responsible for crashing the server, general performance issues and causing down-time. This can be caused by a number of things, but some of the most common are:-

• Customers who use the live server for testing and development of their web site, applications and database.
• Poorly written code that affects the server’s performance when under any kind of load, such as increased traffic.
• Access Databases. Most novice windows developers use the Microsoft Access database as the backend for their web application. This is not what MS Access was intended for, as it is only a single user desktop database and not a database server, thus it is not intended to deal with multiple connections at the same time. When an MS Access database is overloaded with more requests than it can handle, it tends to fail or can even become corrupt. In a Coldfusion MX environment this also causes the ColdFusion server to fail and/or become unresponsive because of the way ColdFusion handles ODBC connections.
• Unexpected increases in traffic. This can have dramatic effects on large sites, especially poorly written sites with no performance tuning. The site may have been running fine for months or even years, but a sudden increase in traffic will then cause its performance issues to become apparent. Even on a well written site, if a customer has done some major marketing which results in millions of hits on their web site this can of course impact other customers.

The other problem with shared hosting environments is that they are not truely secure. In order to actually provide all the facilities and features that customers need in a shared hosting environment, a host has no choice but to allow certain non-secure activities. And no matter what precautions have been taken, a clever programmer/hacker with access to the server can always find a way to circumvent these to his advantage.While we do take extra security measures and are more secure than the average host, we still must allow the most common features that most customers require in order for their web site to operate.

There is a simple rule. Any data that is stored in a publicly accessible area or shared environment cannot be considered secure. And the Internet is a publicly accessible global network.

The Solution

The only way to avoid these types of problems is to have your own dedicated server or VPS that you are not sharing with other customers and web sites and over which you have total control. But this can be a fairly costly solution for smaller companies who do not have the resources or skills to manage their own server, and thus need to pay for a fully managed service.

CFDocument
CFDocument is enabled, but due to the overhead of generating PDF documents, it is not suitable to use shared hosting if you need to generate a large number of documents on a regular basis. If you have substantial requirements for PDF creation, we suggest you go for a dedicated server.
Flash Remoting /FLEX
Flash remoting and FLEX applications will run on our servers. To use this from ColdFusion pages you must make sure you have fully enabled cold\fusion from the web site settings page in HELM as this creates the required virtual directories.
CFX tags
CFX tags will only be installed under the following conditions:- if they are from a commercial vendor and can be verified as being safe and secure and will not affect the performance of the server or in any way inconvenience us or other customers. We provide no support or guarantees for any 3rd party tags we install, and it may be removed at any time without notice if it is found to be in breach of the above conditions. Any time required by us to investigate a CFX tag and verify its suitability for use on our servers will be chargeable.
Security Sandboxes
Security sandboxes define permissions and access to the coldfusion server. If you require use of restricted tags or functions, or wish multiple sites to be able to access each other files, then you will need a security sandbox.
